Plant a tree for the environment and for your health.

Trees are amazing.  Trees reduce global warming and reduce the risk of climate change in many ways. Trees take in carbon dioxide, capturing greenhouse gases and release oxygen through photosynthesis.  The trees  improve and clean our air by absorbing sulphur dioxide and other pollutants thus reducing respiratory issues and help us breathe better.

Trees offer shade and release water vapor which cool the air, contributing to the reduction of global warming. The intricate root system of trees filter out pollutants and slow down water absorption into the soil, the roots help stabilize the ground reducing erosion and flood risk.

Trees offer food and shelter for wildlife, and are a location for biodiversity including wildlife, fungi, insects, moss and many other plant species.

Studies have shown that walking among nature especially under trees, reduce anxiety, depression and stress with a noted blood pressure reduction.  Children who play in nature are more likely to have better mental health and improved cognition. It has been discovered that people in hospital recovering from surgery heal more quickly if they can see trees out the window as compared to those who do not see nature during their hospital stay.

The act of planting a tree can improve your mood.

To use the benefits trees offer us, take a walk in a park or in a forest or perhaps you could plant a tree.  Island Pride Garden co are your tree experts and we have an amazing supply of trees waiting for you to come take a walk in them, to enjoy or perhaps to buy one. Consider buying a tree to plant in your yard or offer to a local community group.

When you consider planting a tree, one should think about what you are looking for- Island Pride Garden co has lots of options. Is it to be flowering?  Is it to be planted near the shore?  Do you want a tall shade tree? Do you want to focus on winter feed for birds- The trees can drop their leaves in the fall or is it an evergreen? What is great- you can have many of these features in one tree. Bring your questions with you when you come to the wood islands garden shop.  For a  flowering tree consider crabapple or a magnolia, dogwood, crimson cloud hawthorne or catalpa? For a specimen or smaller feature tree consider pinky winky hydrangea standard tree, a Japanese maple such as a blood good or waterfall or a satomi kousa dogwood.

Perhaps it is time to think about food – consider an apple, cherry or pear tree.

Shade trees include weeping willows, maples, honey locusts and lindens. The maple tree can be burgundy all year or green in spring and reddish in the fall.  The Norway royal red and crimson king maples have burgundy  leaves all season long.  The red maples include Autumn blaze, Red sunset, Sugar maples, Autumn fantasy and October glory. These maple trees have green leaves in the spring and summer followed by fall colour of incredible variety and intensity of reds, yellows and oranges.

Some trees don’t grow too tall, no more than 15 feet,  so are recommended for planting under or near power lines.

Do you want a tree that does not lose its greenery? Consider emerald or eastern white cedar, spruce or pine tree.
